REFRESHING Duty.
i called our three days duty in Vigan City Health Center Office as refreshing because for the past days, we haven't continued to attend duty so that we can have what they say, "vacation". its refreshing because it restores all the basic things that i have learned.
1ST DAY- BACK TO BASICS DAY
on this day, i thought it would not be different from the hospital setting because, all we have to do is to get the Vital signs of the out-patient such as blood pressure and temperature.
when we had our orientation on the morning with Mrs. Javier, well, not shocked but i was just "naninibago" with the number of patients coming from day to day ranging from 100-200 patients.
and yes, we had almost 160 patients as far as i remember. i was assigned at the admitting area, and it was very stressful because, first, this is new to me, second, the patients are not obediently following instructions, which is the problem- we cannot avoid this situation.
the highlight of this day for me was administering TT (Tetanus Toxoid Vaccine) to those patients who have dog bites. the administration was intradermal, and the result was good.
by the end of this day, our instructor told us that we should expect pre-natal check-ups and immunization on the third day-wednesday, so we should read about this things.
2ND DAY- CIRCUMCISION DAY
on this second day, i was assigned as a VS nurse, which means i have to get the blood pressure of the patients. the number of patients that came in the center are lesser than yesterday, but still, its very tiring.
i think the highlight of this day is in the afternoon where boys came over to have a circumcision. i never saw a boy being circumcised so this is my chance to see one, i said. it was a good experience to observe the circumcision because its an additional idea to me. by the end of this day, our instructor gave us some exercises on how to compute the EDC (expected date of delivery) and the AOG (age of gestation) because tomorrow, our patients are the pregnant women and babies to be immunized.
3RD DAY- IMMUNIZATION DAY.
on this day, it was very nice because i was assigned in the immunization area where i have to administer the vaccines to the baby patients. there where so many patients. i think i have given vaccines for 15 and above number of babies. we have 55+ baby patients, so me and my duty mates are given the chance to administer vaccines for the babies. i have upgraded my confidence in terms of administering vaccines because of this experience. at the end of this day, we had a quiz and a personality test wherein our instructor shared some ideas regarding our personalities.

today, at about 8:00 pm... i opened an account at tumblr.com...
well, i had to because i'm so curious how this site runs...i saw some of my friends blogs and they are so cool and i think, i got inspired. *giggles*
but now, i don't know how to start it anymore. i'd only finished the customized theme+cursor, though it ended good.
one last thing, tomorrow, i don't know what we're gonna do in our subject nursing informatics laboratory, i just hoped that we will not have this 75 item "short quiz".
God help me.Amen.

THE APPLE MAN- Steve Jobs.
so, this is my reaction paper from a movie tribute for Steve Jobs.
you can see the tribute at pbs.org. STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING.
Steve Jobs, the man who change the world through his wide imagination and creativity. How did he gave a great impact to change the world took so much of his perseverance to give the people around him a "thing" that would actually do a lot of things and can be used as a tool. During his early life, he used his ability and believe in himself to create a gadget that would be a help in the everyday life of a man. What I saw in the movie tribute for Jobs is he first created a gadget in line with the telephone industry. With the help of his imagination, he created this to give man an easier and much better way to communicate with our family and friends. With the help of his friend, Steve Wozniak, later that year, again they surprised the world with their very first Apple product. Because of Steve's desire for an easier communication and work, he designed many of his creations to become more enhanced. Its like he is upgrading his creations for a better cause. And all of these helped the people during this times. He has an ability and desire to make things more easier and at the same time, pleasure to live. Dean Hovey, who was the President of Digifit, helped Jobs to create this prototype mouse. Their inspiration of creating this was a deodorant ball and a box. So, this innovation was again, gave us a way to do our work easier. By 1980, he became one of the most richest self-paid man by 29 years old. I admire him for he was still humble and did not satisfy himself because of the money he gained. Years past and he released his Macintosh computer. It was again a successful creation by him, and so with the Imac that stunned the world for a greater view. Now, Apple tablet (Ipad), Ipods and phones are just his few creations for us. His vision to change the world made him a mission to gave us this. I think, he already done it.
The creations of Steve Jobs are very wonderful and amazing. Currently, the Ipad touch is very viral that it infected so much of us. It is a gadget that can be used as a book, a radio, a camera, a bible and at the same time a phone. Jobs' imagination took him to crate this tool. It brought us "different" happiness. He created gadgets that are too easy: EASY TO HANDLE and EASY TO USE which according to Will. I Am. of Black Eyed Peas, he can use an Apple Tab. without even reading a manual. Everything that he learned through his lessons of Calligraphy and even on the teachings of Les Kaye, a Buddhist from India, he applied it on his creations that all turned out very tremendous. Without his creations, I think I cannot enjoy doing my works by writing on so many papers, I cannot enjoy and appreciate music while carrying a boombox, I cannot enjoy playing games by just building blocks and playing tick tack toes in the corner and I cannot have a lot of ways to express my feelings by just writing them on a bark of a tree. THANKS to Steve Jobs, I got my own personal computer at home where I can type my paper works, I got also an Ipod to enjoy music and listen to music whenever I want. I tried to play game on a PlayStation Portable where I enjoy to play up-to-date games where ever I want and last, an internet connected PC where i can make this blog of mine at the same time, make a lot of friends. :) His great vision made us all satisfied with these cool gadgets. And now, we are enjoying them, IF we afford to buy one. All that I have mentioned are the positive outcomes of Jobs' Creations. Now, I have also realized that not all of these have positive outcomes. On the contrary, they also have negative effects on us. They really made our life wonderful and way more easier, but by always using these, we cannot see the disadvantages they brought.
In my own opinion, these gadgets are making our life so easy that we tend to forget how to "produced sweat." Life is really hard but because of these tools that Jobs gave us, LIFE NOW IS SO EASY. Few bad things I know that these tools can give us are: radiation towards our body that could damage body cells; we gain fats because as I have said awhile ago, we really don't excrete our sweat and exercise our body enough, we can acquire eye problems by taking long hours staring at the computer screen and we can also acquire or developed headaches due to migraine. I'm not saying that it is bad to have these gadgets with us but what I'm trying to say is, we should not always depend on these. Steve Jobs gave us what we want but we should not abuse them and also ourselves. Steve is a great man, and as a nursing student, I can see how his works affect my chosen profession. It is a really, really big advantage at the hospital how all of soooo many workloads of a nurse for four hours can be done for one and a half hour only. That's how he changed the flow of healthcare services inside the hospital. Many industries now have changed from "sticks to steels". The telephone industry made way for an easier communication, the music industry for a livelier and easier way to listen to music anywhere you want, and the motion-picture industry which gave us a clearer, better and more satisfying view for the movies and pictures we see. All are brought by one man. An intelligent, humble, curious, creative, artist, joyful and good-looking man- Steve Jobs. Now that he is in heaven, all of his creations will retain and use by us. For he is the man who visioned to changed the world: from punched cards to personal computers, from telenet to electronic mails, FROM BOOMBOX TO IPODS.
A quote by Steve:
" Being the richest man on cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me."
“These technologies can make life easier, can let us touch people we might not otherwise. You may have a child with a birth defect and be able to get in touch with other parents and support groups, get medical information, the latest experimental drugs. These things can profoundly influence life. I’m not downplaying that."

“The Random Me” Who am I?
“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” This is a well-known line that was made famous by Tom Hanks in the movie Forrest Gump. Life, at times, can be just as unpredictable as a box of chocolate. What lies beneath each chocolate coating, as with each new day is unpredictable. As a new day takes place, I am becoming more curious of myself. Each phase of my life, I establish myself as a new & unique individual, nevertheless, I’m still questioning- “Who am I?”
I was born on the 13th day of August, year of 1994, going 17. I’m a proud Leo. I love animals, especially dogs and bears. I’m super addicted to green stuffs, that’s why right now, I’m starting to collect green things. I have a simple but tightly-bonded-extended family. And I have to tell that my idol or should I say my hero, is my Grandpa (mother side). I did not have the chance to know or even see my father, but it’s not a big deal anyway. I am so much thankful and contented of what I have right now.
Well right now, I’m quite young, I think! I just graduated high school and I’m a first year student of UNP now. I’m proud to say that I am learning to become a nurse. Since I was a child, I knew already what I wanted to be in the future. I wanted to be a surgeon. High, isn’t it? If God permits, I know that someday, I can be that. I do enjoy college life but I prefer high school due to the work load. I would like to involve myself on some of the activities in our college, but I’m worried that I may not balance my time and schedules. So, I’ll just wait until my ‘spirit’ will tell me to do so. College lifestyle is fun though; the people are all very mature and independent. I think, I have to concede that I’m not that mature yet. It’s very different but this whole notion makes me feel like I’m growing a bit too quickly.
Like everyone, I have friends. However, I don’t have many close friends, only a small group of close friends that I trust & know very well. I’m much more comfortable when I am with them. They have been a part of me, since I knew them more. Up to now, I am still gaining friends. As a daughter, well, I cannot say that I am good neither bad . I just do the right things I know. Mmmmm, foods. I do quite well in that kind of matter. I can say that, it’s the best thing to do on earth. Whenever I’m depressed, stressed (toxic!), glad, tired or any emotions, it’s what I do-especially when I don’t do anything. When I’m bored, I usually sing, dance, play guitar, cook & eat, of course, listen to music, read books/magazines, & watch television.
I totally admit that I’m a very unique girl. I laugh a lot at practically anything & everything. I do a lot of random things but I am proud of them because I think it’s what makes me different.

“Four = Better Me” How Do I Become a Better Person?
A better world, a better home and a better life. We all want this, but how can we win this prices of life? Should we start it with someone else? NO, we should start it with ourselves. Changing and improving our personality towards a better Y-O-U.
The question now is, “How will I become a better person?” Well, I have considered four things in achieving the ‘better you.’ First on the list, the environment. They are the things we see, it may be a person, an animal or a thing surrounding us all the time. The environment plays a vital role in the making of a better person. Question: How? The environment affects our personality a lot; what we see, we do. It’s like a drug that gently transforms us, for good or for bad. We are a part of this, so we have to deal with it. Second is the mind- our knowledge, intellect and rational ability. I’ve considered this one because it’s something that we can’t lose. We carry this throughout our life. It helps us a lot in decision-making especially if we are well educated. If we doubt, we are thinking, therefore we are aware that we have to survive and continue to exist. We understand things and put it into reality. Third on the list is the body. Yes, the human body. We cannot live on earth without this. It’s a material element and requires enough attention to maintain its power. Good health must be stable & continuously provided so that we could do things well, physically. Lastly is the soul. This is our spirit. A substance that is infinite or endless. It is satisfied thru our relationship with God and other man. The body and soul are the two most important components that comprise us. If one is missing, the other wouldn’t work.
The four things: environment, mind, body & soul must be well-fitted with each other so that it would result to the “Better Person.” Still now, I am working this out to improve my personality. With these four concepts put together, I can become a better person. Ordinary, simple, no arguments, no worries, no long-lasting problems & no discomforts.

Filipino idiosyncrasies-I’m uniquely Filipino: The Filipino Youth- a Product of its Own Country

(InfoComrade.com)
As time goes by, changes are brought one by one to the different nations of the world. The continuous modernization, industrialization and increasing levels of urbanization along with the worsening status of poverty have drastically changed the face of the Filipino society and people. Each of these transitions affects each Filipino family, and what’s worse, it’s effects to every Filipino youth. But still, you can recognize the true nature of being a Filipino with their actions. Philippines is a gifted nation; Filipino youth, still carry those gifts.
By just standing at one corner and observing each Filipino youth, we can merely see the gifts of the Filipino people. Changes may affect them, but not all their natures. The Filipino youth is friendly. He easily gets himself in groups or “barkada” as what they call it. And being one of the members of the group and as a friend, he fights for the sake of his companions and is always there for a sense of mutual help. They even work together not for payment but to have a bonding. This is the spirit of “pakikisama.” As a friend, they tend to be more loyal with each other. They offer an unending love & support. There may be times that one of them gets wrong, still they forgive him because of the trust that they have with each other. The Filipino youth is hospitable, as always. With each friend they gather, they welcome him full of kindness. They offer everything they have and not being selfish about it, as they do it, they make you feel “at home”, and treat you as their brother/sister. The Filipino youth has a great respect also for their elders and parents. Yes, sometimes we may notice unpleasant things, but it’s their way of defending their selves (sometimes in a wrong way). As a young person, they obey their elders and do anything that could make them happy and feel young “at heart.” The Filipino youth is closely attached to his family and also his friends. He finds it difficult losing another member of the group or family member. In line with this, he always says- One for all, all for one.
We may see some teens singing current pop hits and dancing current dance steps, but if we dig deeper, we can find out that Filipino youth is still a product of its own country. Everything may change, but we, Filipino youths, will still carry the pride of every Filipino in the world.

Transformations of a Historical Town- Vigan
Philippines is one of the richest countries in the world brought by its fresh natural environment & resources which gained much attention to other powerful countries. From the colonization of Spaniards & Japanese to the Americans. The different countries that tried to conquer and own our country had different reasons in coming to our land, but because of the courage and bravery showed by our dear heroes and forefathers, we are now enjoying the freedom they have fought for. Although, foreigners have tried to colonize our country, they have shared also their own cultures to our predecessors and until now, it is still seen in our historical cities. One of the cities that have preserved such beautiful cultures and heritage is Vigan.
I live in the Bario of San Julian Sur, which is one of the 39 Barrios composing Vigan. Many changes had taken place from time to time that changed the rich culture of Vigan.
The city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur was called Kabig-Bigaan to Vigan to Ciudad Fernandina De Vigan. It is an island, which used to be detached from the mainland by three rivers - the great Abra River, the Mestizo River and the Govantes River. It is the countries most extensive and surviving historic city from the 15th century Spanish Colonial Period. Of all the countries that colonized our country, the Spanish colonizers were the one who had the left many contributions in our town. The city of Vigan still reveals the ethnicity of the Spaniards. During the time before I was born, the way of living of the Bigueños was different from now. Although the city is still known for its unique architecture and oriental building designs and houses made out of stones and windows-out of capiz- Bahay na Bato, the town slowly altered itself into a modern type of housing and way of living. During the time of my grandparents, they told me that there are more Spanish houses present than today. Before, the modes of transportation of the people in Vigan, especially in Barrios were “pasagad”, “kariton” and the well-known “kalesa” while in the mainland, they have those old-fashioned cars brought by the Spaniards. Now, what you see all the time are up-to-the-minute luxury cars and motorcycles. Seldom, we see an Ilocano riding a kalesa, but often tourists ride this kind of transportation-which is a perfect pair for their tour around the city. Way back during this time, education was only for men, only few women are given the chance to learn. They believed that women should only stay in their houses either helping their mother, serving their husband or taking care of their kids. But then, there was the time when women have given the chance to prove that they should not only stay in houses but also to learn as much as the men do. At this time, there is equality between the male and female- which is a good transformation. During the time of Spanish colonization, learning the Spanish linguistics was a part of the curriculum in most schools and universities. It is expected that Bigueños also practiced speaking Spanish language and with their fresh Iloco dialect. Chavacano- a Creole language based largely on Spanish vocabulary is also used. Nowadays different verbal practices are heard everyday- there’s the ‘gay-lingo’ by third-sex males and street-words acquired in big cities. During this earlier period, inhabitants wear vintage type of clothing which is very good to look at especially for women. They picture the “mahinhin” type of a girl. Females wear the traditional cloth which is the Baro’t Saya with a touch of Spanish design while males wear their Barong. Mestizas or women who belong in wealthy families wear the Spanish type of clothing and accessories like mantilla and peineta. The cloth fabrics used for making traditional Spanish clothes were rich and heavy, with decorations in gold and silver thread with jewels or pearls. At present, people are so liberated especially on the part of females. People are now practicing either undersized clothes/dress or loose pants and shirts. People do this for the same reason- for fashion purposes. Cuisines present during the colonization were also blended with Spanish dishes like the Paella or Arroz Valenciana, but in Barrios, the food is largely composed of root crops, vegetables & some meat simply cooked in clay stoves. Delicacies are also a favorite food during merienda like bibingka, tupig, patupat and boiled kamote or kahoy. Currently, due to the modernization of the country, it had brought varieties of foods & cuisines. Children are being presented with different kinds of fast foods and eat few or not traditional foods. Relationship between parents & their children was also affected. In general, Filipinos were pleased because of their respect for elderly manner, but now, this attitude has faded. Today, children show no respect and bad attitude towards their parents.
All of the changes in the culture of every Bigueños were brought by the high-modernization of the country which is acquired to other nations. It is natural for us to go with the flow of the environment. Hopefully, some of the cultures of a Bigueño is still and will be preserve and well-look-after by the next coming generations.

Concealing a Patient's Medication is NOT Good.
Nurses should do the right care to their patients and provide them the best they can give.
Patients have the right to refuse treatments and medications according to the Patient’s Bill of Rights. As a health care provider, you are required to the Patient’s Bill of Rights. As a health care provider, you are required to make them understand the risk of refusing those medication and treatment. With the help of an informed consent, you are both safe in doing this act.
As a student nurse, I would disagree in disguising the medication that is to be given to patients who have refused to receive one. Even if these medications will help them survive, it is the right of the patient to know and refuse medications or treatment. This issue must be discussed with the patient, relatives, and families and to the professionals involved in the health care setting and is recorded in the patients chart. Nurses who are disobeying this rule must be punished even if they’re goal is for the better condition of their patient. Hiding medications to the patients should not be tolerated because others may take this as an opportunity to do some personal bad things to their patients. This may become a bad habit of the health professionals and for not recognizing the Patient’s Bill of Rights.

Today, the number of teenagers engaging theirselves in premarital sex is increasing. Sex education is a great help in giving awareness to the students the risk of engaging their selves sexually. Sex education is not a subject on the preparation for a sexual intercourse; it is a vital study in imparting the teens the risk of an early sex relationship and entering the life as a teen-parent. Sex education can help people, especially teenagers, to prevent them from harmful diseases that are able to take their life away. It also helps them to understand the risks before it actually happens. In this case, women have a greater impact in relation to sexual contact. Most women who have experienced sex end up having (unwanted) babies. One goal of sex education is to ensure that young people know how to avoid becoming pregnant in an unplanned way. Some teens engaged in premarital sex are somewhat wise, too – they use contraceptives to avoid getting pregnant. But, it does not mean that using contraceptives will permit teenagers to be sexually active. They should be reminded of the limits and risk of using it. Some of this can malfunction and end up getting pregnant.
Sex education, on it lighter side, it would serve as awareness to the youth at early stage of what sex is all about. Cause through it, they will be acquainted in things that should be done and what should not. It’s like putting them in the reality at a young age, answering the questions that bother them. Youngsters are said to be aggressive and curious which tends them to experiment and sometimes putting their selves in the worst situation. Through sex education, they would know the consequences of their acts. They could reflect and the bottom-line, awareness would prevent the greater problem that curiosity would bring.

Why do Nurses need to be Honest.
When nurse communicate with patients, being honest is an important way to foster trust and show respect for them.
Patients themselves are the ones who should know more about their health than others. They are the most important person involved in the health care setting. As a health care provider, do you have the right of not telling the truth to your patient? No. Every patient must be aware of the things they are undergoing and must be able to understand them clearly to satisfy their curiousness. Unless, the patient does not want to be told the truth or the physician / health care provider sees that the patient may become very depressed and gets himself killed. Giving patients truthful information helps them to become informed participants in important health care decision. Thus, patient should be told all relevant aspects of their illness.
It is very hypocritical for patients and clients receiving falls and inaccurate results, coming from the persons who are expected to save lives. Every individual has its own weaknesses. Others who receives false results unknowingly may look on the positive side and enjoy their remaining days while some gets depressed and may lead to suicidal because of the fear of getting severe pain. As said by the author of the article, people involved in the health care team should explain to the people the imperfections of all clinical tests. They just don’t have to rely in only one source. So, in my side, I would recommend the people to have second options so that they could see the difference between the two, if they all have the means, why not?

“Nursing is All about Caring”
Nurses do not require specialties and don’t have to be as smart as doctors do. As long as a nurse, you know the most basic techniques and you can save life – job well done!
Nurses possess the most important role in a hospital setting. They act as a family member to their patients and give them comfort when they needed it the most. That’s the reason why the letters “TLC” was connected in the nursing profession. How can a registered nurse with technical excellence cans can be a nurse to his/her patients if he/she doesn’t even know how to provide the most basic care?
For as long as you know how to deal with your patient’s life, you are a NURSE. Hold their hands if they need it, be a listener, be an advocate to them and give them a sense of hope that they can survive what they are experiencing right now. This are only few simple things that a nurse could do but this could help a lot in brining your patient’s life alive. Tender loving care is something nurses should always remember and as a student nurse, I myself will remember it.

i really, really want to make a shirt out of this- well, maybe because i designed it. i just took some pictures at the net, and make something i really want, so here's the result...i'm still working out on financial matters, to make my "want" possible. :D
will you lend me some? :)
a visit at the syquia museum
i'm doing good :)

the end of the school year is near, and i can say that i'm doing good! :
in every aspect of my life, i believed that i haven't done something terrible. i am happy with what i am doing nowadays, & happy with who i am with.
being a nursing student is really hard, i admit it, but i do not make myself get tired of learning everyday because i am enjoying my time with my lessons- although sometimes, i's not that enjoyable really.
for the past days, i'm taking my time relaxing for awhile, preparing my brain for the finals for this semester. what i do is- watch television, read my notes sometimes, cook something crazy, facebooking and listen to music before getting to sleep.
well, i didn't planned to make a new post today, just visiting my blog account, but then. i have that feeling of wanting to type (i think) something about my life this start of 2012.
okay, if i have time again, i'll make another one again- now, i feel more relaxed! :)
